The Giles County Board of Education approved a contract with Vickie Beard and officially hiring her as the Giles County Director of Schools during the board meeting.
During the meeting, the board set a called meeting to discuss the 2020-21 budget for May 21st following a work session.
A $483,000 budget amendment to draw funds from different areas of the budget to buy the textbooks for next school year’s curriculum was approved.
The board also approved a resolution on first reading to adopt state of education emergency rules in place of local school policies in response to the impact of COVID-19 on the 2019-20 school year.
A proposal was heard from Robin Peery and Devon Yurkon with the Boys and Girls Club concerning the possibility of the club using either Pulaski Elementary or Southside Elementary School to allow them to expand their summer learning program in Giles County from 18 to approximately 50 students with the help of funding from the state.
Giles County schools are closed and board members asked for additional time to consider the request and find additional information before making a decision. The board voted to discuss the matter at the next work session scheduled on May 21st.
The board approved the adoption of textbooks for new curriculum and changing graduation dates to June 25th for Giles County High School and June 26th for Richland High School.
