The number of flu cases continue to rise in Giles County and local physicians are urging anyone who has not received a flu vaccine this season to get one as soon as possible.

No appointments are needed at the local Health Department to receive a free flu vaccine.

In a phone conversation today (Monday) with Amy McGowan of the Giles County Board of Education she had not received a morning call from school nurses of high absenteeism. "We have to wait and see what later today brings, she added.

McGowan said the county absenteeism has not been that high to close the schools.

Neighboring counties were close due to sickness a few days last week and also today (Monday).

The flu virus is highly contagious, so it is important for people who are ill to stay home and avoid contact with others until their symptoms have resolved to help prevent further spread of the illness which includes staying away from work, school and other public places while sick.

Doctors advise parents not to send a child to school with a runny nose, coughing, fever or vomiting.
