An investigation by law enforcement has begun on a dangerous strain of heroin after multiple local drug overdoses and one death in recent days.

In a statement released, Columbia Police is investigating three suspected overdoses that occurred beginning on June 26.

None of the individuals involved were immediately identified by name.

Police say one suspected overdose resulted in the death of a 30-year-old man and another 20-year-old male remains hospitalized and in critical condition.

In a third incident, a 24-year-old woman survived an overdose after being successfully revived with Naloxone, an “opioid antagonist” used to counter the effects of an overdose.

Investigators continue to aggressively pursue leads in all these cases, and encourage anyone who may have information regarding the recent incidents and the drugs involved to contact the department.
