Blueberry season opened with a summer celebration on Saturday at Hampshire's Highland Realm Farm.
The day-long outdoor festival marked a 10-year milestone for Deanna Naddy who planted her first northern highbush blueberry plants on the 153-acre property just outside of Hampshire proper a decade ago.
For the past four years, Naddy has opened her farm to the public welcoming visitors to pick berries themselves as well as offering fresh berries, baked goods, and plant-based remedies from the farm store.
The former associate dean for nursing at Columbia State Community College and a proponent of alternative healing methods, Naddy said the blueberries followed her desire to better care for her land, ending her use of chemical fertilizers, and furthering her passion of caring for others.
Young families from the nearby communities of Savannah and Pulaski attended the celebration.
Highland Realm is located at 4411 Hampshire Pike.
Blueberry picking is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 12 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
