The Giles County School System, partnering with Martin Methodist College, has received a grant from Dollar General Literacy Foundation for the system's summer reading program.
The total amount of the grant is $75,979, with $25,401 going to the school system for eight teachers, four bus drivers, and instructional supplies. The remaining $50,000 will stay with MMC to purchase books.
Supervisor of PreK-5 Instruction April Sakowicz said the program will be a drive-through pick up of books with bus delivery to those who cannot pick up their books at the schools.
Kindergarten students through fifth grade will receive books through the program.
Sakowicz explained to board members that the school system has received the governor's Early Literacy Foundation Grant that will provide an additional 10 books to each of Giles County's rising first through third graders.
The grant and summer reading program came as a budget amendment request to the board.
Also, the transfer of $5,510 in reserve money from other summer programs to add three teachers and instructional supplies to the summer reading program.
The budget amendments were approved by the school board and will need to be approved by the Giles County Commission.
