Scam artists stole over $18 million from Tennesseans in 2019, making the Volunteer State the nation’s fifth-leading state per capita when it comes to complaints about fraud and other scams.
Giles County law officers have received several scam complaints throughout the county this year.
According to Sheriff Kyle Helton,  his Department will not be able to get the money or even proceed very far with an investigation because the scammers are in a foreign country, and the money is sent to that country.
According to a new report by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reports of identity theft also grew in a year’s time, moving Tennessee to 21st in the country.
The FTC’s report was compiled from complaints to the FTC’s call center or online as well as complaints filed with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and other organizations.
