Giles County Executive Melissa Greene and Emergency Management Director Jeremey Holley joined Alexis in WKSR’s studio with an update on the county and COVID-19. Executive Greene reminded listeners that the closures were intended to prevent a surge of COVID-19 and to allow for medical facilities to be able to handle and prepare COVID-19 cases. The State of Tennessee and Governor Bill Lee are now moving the state toward re-opening. However, COVID-19 is still here and the public should continue to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and the public, including wearing face-masks, observing social distancing, limiting public exposure as much as possible, and continuing good hygiene practices like hand-washing and sanitizing.

County Offices will re-open on May 18th with some new guidelines put in place to protect the health of employees and the public:

  • County offices will now require that anyone entering be wearing a face mask.
  • If you do not have a facemask available they will offer a disposable mask to you.
  • They will also be offering sanitizing stations and ask that your please sanitize your hands upon entry.
  • It is recommended that you continue calling the office to set up appointments to cut down on waiting lines and to limit crowds.

The County Clerk’s Office has also implemented some new guidelines as they are re-opening. Their phone number is 363-1509.

  • There will be a desk in the lobby of the SunTrust Annex with paperwork.
  • They are limiting entry to the south end entrance (near the elevator).
  • No more than five people will be allowed in the County Clerk’s office at one time.
  • Renewals and handicap placards will be directed to use the far-right drive-thru . There will be signs to identify the drive-thru.
  • Only one person per party is allowed in the building to do business.
  • License plate renewals will continue to be offered over the phone and by e-mail.
  • Sanitize hands upon entry, and continue to observe social distancing.
  • It is recommended that you continue calling the office to set up appointments to cut down on waiting lines and to limit crowds.

The Sherriff’s Department is continuing their food and prescription delivery program. You can call them at 363-3505. The jail’s lobby will remain closed to the public for now.

Giles County Full Commission Meeting will be virtual meeting. If you would like a copy of the video of the commission meeting, call the Executive’s office, as the video will be made available to the public within 48 hours. They hope to resume in-person committee meetings on May 26th at the Agri-park.

Currently the Agri-park will remain closed through the end of the month. The decision to re-open will be re-evaluated closer to the beginning of June.

Emergency Management Director Jeremy Holley encourages you to take advantage of the free testing at the Giles County Health Department if you feel sick or are experiencing any symptoms.  Holley also informed us that the Tennessee Department of Health is no longer informing the Emergency Management office every time there is an additional case. They are only informed if there is an increase of five or more cases. Otherwise, the Tennessee Department of Health releases this information daily at 2:00 PM. The Health Department also has masks for distribution.
