There were some tense moments at a Maury County church Sunday after a man was arrested outside in the parking area.

One observer thought it was odd when he noticed a man leaving Bethel Church of Christ in Culleoka right as the sermon was starting.

Giles County Deputy Mike Thomason went outside to check on David Lewis as he was headed to his vehicle.

Thomason called the Sheriff's Department dispatch office after he saw a weapon in the car seat and was told that Lewis is wanted by Marshall County for theft.

Backup officers were later called after Thomason spotted Lewis pulling something long out of his car trunk.

Police say the firearm in the car was a pellet pistol, but found a long sword and knives in the trunk.

The church was put on lockdown for a short time and the church service ended without further incident.

Lewis was arrested at the scene.
