Teachers and staff members at Maury County Public Schools will have an average of $14.06 deducted from their paychecks for the next six months after an error made by the county’s financial management office.

Last week, it was discovered that Medicare and Social Security deductions for retirement plans were omitted from the paychecks of school district employees for all of 2019.

Maury County Director of Finance said he is taking full responsibility for the error, which resulted in employees accidentally being overpaid last year.

A total of 1,800 school district employees will see deductions on their paychecks for the next 12 pay periods in order to cover the $303,741.19 in unpaid Medicare and Social Security deductions.

Depending on their retirement and healthcare plans, each employee currently owes an average of $168.75 in contributions.

Those without retirement plans, substitute teachers, food service employees and all other county employees will not be subject to the deductions.
