The Giles County Commissioners elected a new attorney during today’s monthly meeting.

Lucy Henson was the only attorney nominated at the 9 a.m. meeting. She received 15 votes with 3 commissioners voting no and 2 sustained.

Henson replaces Chris Williams, who has been the county attorney for over 4 years.

In Giles County, the county attorney is appointed to a one-year term by the county commission and will run through September 30th, 2020.

The commission has been trying the last several months to determine if a conflict of interest exists because County Commissioner Terry Harwell’s wife, who is employed in the office Attorney Chris Williams.

The issue was sent back to Legislative Committee multiple times over the past few months.

Williams remained county attorney until the commissioners reached a decision today.

In other business, the commission approved reports from Finance Director and a resolution of surety bonds for other county officials and county employees required to have bonds.

A resolution to raise fees to meet state minimum rates of reimbursement for the Giles County Ambulance Service was also approved.

Economic Development Director David Hamilton addressed the commission and explained that unemployment rate was down from 3.4 percent to 3.2 percent and he had received letters that two businesses decided not to locate in Giles County because of minor reasons.
