The Giles County Board of Education gave the go ahead last night (Thursday) for HFR Design to take the next step to perform an Americans With Disabilities Act assessment for all schools in the county.

During the board’s monthly meeting, Jim Gilliam from HFR Design, said they would create a draft after looking at all school sites.

Gilliam said the fee could range for the school system’s assessment between $75,000 to $100,000 or even as low as $50,000.

The ADA assessment is required of all county government agencies and HFR Design is the same company which recently completed the same ADA assessment in Giles County.

Other items approved were the budget amendments to be sent to commission including the Transportation Supervisor’s salary schedule and equity, student needs, school bus purchase proposal and capital projects.

On second reading the Line and Staff Relations, Out of State Students, General Fixed Assets, Service Animals and Insurance Management policies were all passed together.

First reading polices approved by the board were Unmanned Aircraft/Drones, Interscholastic Athletics, and Code of Conduct with an exception of Bus Conduct.

During a lengthy discussion concerning cameras on buses the Bus Conduct Policy was tabled after Teresa Busby, Transportation Director, told the board that only half of the fleet carry cameras.

Attorney Tim Underwood agreed to update the policy that a video would be kept for seven business days if a person request to view an issue.

In new business, the board agreed for the maintenance department to work on the lighting project at Richland School athletic fields and sealed bids for the disposition of a storage shed at Pulaski Elementary School.

The board also approved to allow Richland School to add to a baseball building. The addition will be paid for with money saved by the Richland Baseball team from fund-raising.
