A Minor Hill alderman has resigned due to work and family responsibilities.

Scott Jarrell, who has served as alderman for several years told the board he would continue to be active in the Minor Hill Volunteer Fire Department.

Anyone interested in serving as alderman may contact city hall or any member of the board of mayor and alderman, who may appoint a replacement to serve until the August 2020 city election. Seats held by Aldermen Brandon Beard and Roger Thompson will also be on the ballot in August 2020.

During the monthly meeting, the board approved a beer permit for Larry Long to operate Larry’s Tavern and heard that Wendell Phillips is continuing his training to be a reserve officer in the Minor Hill Police Department.

Minor Hill Mayor Tracy Wilburn told the board the city may not owe Giles County as much as first thought. The board was updated by the mayor on sales tax collections from water bills, which were triggered by an audit of county finances by a private business.

Wilburn said several questions remain, it is not going to be as bad as it had looked before. City officials have asked the state Department of Revenue about the collections and we are in the process of settling a debt we now owe to the county, where we have been unknowingly receiving their sales tax on people outside of the city limits.

Wilburn told the board, the disputed total of approximately $28,322 has shrunk to about $14,000. When the issue is settled, we are going to be receiving sales tax back, but it is going to be on people who live in the Minor Hill city limits.
