A 74-year-old man was fatally shot in Ardmore near the Tennessee state line late Thursday night.

Investigators were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. to the scene on Alabama 251 on the south side of Ardmore.

Deputy Stephen Young says the man and his wife were inside when they heard a noise in the backyard. The woman told authorities that he went outside to check on the noise and she heard gunshots.

Law enforcement responded and found the man dead in the backyard with gunshot wounds.

Officers deployed tracking dogs in the area and authorities say the shooter may have left the area on foot.

The dogs, as of  Friday morning were unable to find a scent in the backyard.

There are no identified suspects at this time and  deputies are collecting evidence and trying to piece together what happened.

Authorities say that people in the area should make sure that their doors and windows are locked, stay inside, and ask that they call the sheriff's department if seeing anything suspicious, including someone just walking around.

This is the second deadly shooting scene in the area this week.
