More than 30 high school students joined Spring Hill team members this summer for a two-day manufacturing experience made possible through GM’s Community Grant program and a partnership with the South Central Tennessee Workforce Alliance.

The event at the GM plant included a career advice panel. Students listened as several GM team members participated, with expertise in security, engineering, facilities and finance.

As a tradition, at the end of the two-day experience, students presented to parents and staff about their biggest takeaways, surprises and recommendations for future programs.

Academy participant Emily Shand said she plans to major in industrial and systems engineering at either Purdue University or the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

The academy provided a top-notch opportunity for high school students to get a glimpse of all aspects of building a vehicle, including the soft skills required to succeed in the workplace, said Jan McKeel, South Central Tennessee Workforce Alliance president.

GM is Maury County’s largest employer, with nearly 3,800 workers.
