During the Giles County Board of Education monthly meeting a contract extension for Director of Schools Philip Wright and proposed school renovations were left without a resolution.

The board approved the Director Evaluation score of 2.55 out of a possible four.

The matter of an extension to Wright’s contract, which had been tabled at a previous meeting, was not considered when no motion to remove it from the table was offered by any board member.

Wright enters the final year of his current contract in July and had requested a three-year extension noting that it is customary practice for school systems to consider extending a director’s contract the year before it expires.

Wright said considering the request now would give the board time to search for a new director if they choose not to retain him beyond the 2019-20 school year.

School board members’ evaluations, obtained through a request for records, shows the board was asked to score Wright in seven categories with 34 areas of performance. The evaluation scoring was: 1 Never Meets Expectations, 2 Seldom Meets Expectations, 3 Usually Meets Expectations, 4 Consistently Meets Expectations.

The extension of Wright’s contract remains tabled, meaning it could be considered at a future meeting.

The proposal to renovate and upgrade all county schools at a cost of $16.2 million was also tabled by the board, meaning the matter can be considered at a future meeting.

In making a motion to table the proposal, school board member Knox Vanderpool told the board in light of other costs the school board is considering, including employee raises, the school upgrades are not a priority above other concerns. The vote to table the proposal was unanimous.
