Dozens of water rescues took place over the weekend in counties across Tennessee after massive rainfall led to dangerous flooding.

A total of 13.1 inches of rain fell in Giles County during the last 8 days and schools were closed Monday, but the decision to reopen schools was made for Tuesday.

According to Giles County Schools director Phillip Wright,  13 weather days are built in the school calendar from student/teachers spending an extra 15 minutes in the classroom each day.

Wright said closing county schools due to weather is a decision from the Giles County Highway Department, Sheriff Kyle Helton, himself  and Emergency Management Service.

Roads reported closed today (Monday) are Veto Rd at Bridge, which will be closed all week; Prospect Road, Dixontown Road; Kelly Creek Road; Jack Holt Road; Minnow Branch; Gunter Smith Road; Old Campbellsville Road; Little Dry Creek Rd at Hwy 166; Clear Creek Circle; Briar Patch Road; Dog Branch Road; Vales Mill Rd at Boat Ramp; Alsup Hollow Rd at low water crossing; Baugh Road at River Bridge;Robertson Hollow Road; Milky Way Road; Pleasant Hill Road and Sumac Road.

Over the weekend, Giles County Fire and Rescue volunteers rescued four people from a home Saturday morning on Alf Harris Road.

Also, reports indicate members of the Giles County Fire and Rescue swift water team assisted County EMS with a medical call that was not accessible by ambulance due to a flooded roadway.

The Elk River is expected to crest at 25 feet late today (Monday) or early Tuesday with a longer duration. The state EMA says the river will be at 25 feet which is one foot below the major flood stage.

Road crews are out in Giles County cleaning debris, checking roadways and bridges.
