A woman died after being struck by a train in Athens Monday night, according to Athens Police.


The collision happened around 9:10pm. Police responded to an area near where the railroad tracks cross South Street on a report of a person hit by a CSX train.


Police found the body of a female in the area north of South Street. The woman has not been identified, pending the notification of her family.


“Currently this case is under investigation, however we believe this was probably be a suicide,” Athens Police Chief, Floyd Johnson said.


No further details about the investigation were available.
