A fatal wreck in Columbia is under investigation after a 33-year-old motorcycle rider died in a violent collision over the weekend.  

According to media sources the crash took place on Highway 31 North Sunday afternoon near Lookout Drive.  

The motorcycle was torn into multiple pieces after it collided with an SUV at 70 miles per hour.

Multiple sources confirm that high speed played a role in the wreck. A state trooper was working that stretch of the highway Sunday and saw the motorcycle go by them in the opposite direction.  

By the time the trooper turned around and caught up, the wreck had already taken place.
