Tens of thousands of Tennesseans are eligible to get their drivers licenses back following a federal ruling last week that found a state regulation to be unconstitutional.
Under the law, the state Department of Safety could revoke a person's license simply because they didn't pay court fees. Federal judge Aleta Trauger found the provision to be discriminatory against lower income citizens.
An attorney who represents a number of clients with revoked licenses calls the ruling a major victory. He says often those who have their licenses revoked because they can't pay court costs often end up in a downward spiral where they are unable to get to work and therefore unable to pay back the court fees.
