In 1995 the eyes of the nation were directed toward Middle Tennessee when Richland High School was the scene of a shooting.

Angry over poor grades, 17-year-old Jamie Rouse walked into the school with a rifle and shot teachers Carolyn Foster and Carol Yancey and 14-year-old student Diane Collins.

Rouse was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 1997. He received additional time on attempted murder charges and is serving his sentence at the South Central Corrections Facility in Clifton.

Following recent school shootings in Florida and Kentucky there has been a big emphasis on safety and security in our schools in Tennessee, with the state providing thirty five million dollars in grant money for all 147 school systems in the state. The Giles County system received $134,690 in grant money for extra security such as cameras and other items in schools.
