The city of Elkton in the future could have areas set aside for residential, jobs creation, a regional and business district and a downtown center, under a proposal presented by staff members of the Tennessee Department of Transportation at a public meeting at Elkton Elementary School.

Approximately 20 people attended the recent meeting at which Matthew Long and Jonathan Russell from TDOT presented proposed preliminary plans for the city

While Elkton has received a grant from TDOT for planning, no money was allocated for improvements, such as sidewalks, street lighting or landscaping.

However Elkton has received a grant to lay sidewalks between the school and the city buildings, just off Highway 31.

In July, the city received another grant through the Department of Environment and Conservation to make improvements at the city park.

As growth continues from Huntsville and Madison County, Ala., Elkton stands to gain new businesses and residents. Approximately 30 miles away from Elkton, Mazda-Toyota has announced plans to build a manufacturing plant between Huntsville and Athens.
