The Athens Police Department is conducting a murder investigation after a late Tuesday shooting incident.

Chief Floyd Johnson said it happened shortly before 10 p.m. at a residence in the 700 block of Horton Street. Officers and paramedics arrived to find Brenton C. Gatlin, 27, had been shot once. According to reports, Gatlin was transported to Athens-Limestone Hospital, where he later died.

Investigators worked through the night interviewing potential witnesses.

The Police Chief said his department is looking for several people to interview about this case and they do have a person of interest.
