The Alabama legislature has unanimously passed a bill that will name a portion of US Highway 72 east after Agent Billy Clardy, III.

The bill designates the mile between mile markers 100 and 101 on US 72 near the Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve as the “Agent Billy Clardy III Memorial Mile.”

Clardy worked for the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, the Ardmore Police Department, and the Fayetteville Police Department in Tennessee prior to becoming an officer with the Huntsville Police Department in 2005.

In 2018, he joined the Madison-Morgan County Gulf Coast Drug Task Force, known as the STAC Team.

Clardy was working as a STAC agent when he was killed during an operation where officers were attempting to buy 100 pounds of marijuana from LaJeromeny Brown, the man convicted for Clardy’s death.
