A new scam has cropped-up in Middle Tennessee and North Alabama.

Scammers are selling plots of land they don’t own. Experts say one of the best ways to beat this scam is to get to know your neighbors.

Recently, two people received calls from neighbors asking why they were selling their land. They saw for sale signs on their properties but the landowners had no idea what they were talking about.

The scam works because all of the correspondence is online.

For landowners, you should check on your property occasionally to ensure nothing has been tampered with, and search your property online also for the same reason.

For buyers, be wary if a deal seems too good to be true, or if the information seems vague in any way.

If a fake sale does go through the buyer could be out thousands of thousands of dollars.
