Giles County Attorney Lucy Henson has been asked to draft a language change to a state law that allows the county to gain more goods and services from local businesses.

After a request from Beth Moore-Sumners, director of the county financial management office, the county commission’s Legislative Committee asked Attorney Henson to look into drafting language to change part of the Act of 1981, a state law which sets policies under which the financial management office operates.

The proposed change, if endorsed by the county commission, would be presented to 28th District State Senator Joey Hensley, and 70th District State Representative Clay Doggett to present to the State Legislature.

In the past, MooreSumners said her office had to tell some local businesses and merchants that they could no longer do business with the county because of a possible conflicts of interest.

The proposed change, she said, would allow the county to do more business locally and help local residents.

Establishment of the county financial management office is one of the best things to benefit the county that has come out of the Budget Act of 1981, according to County Commissioner Roger Reedy, who said he would not want to weaken the office’s scope.
