Eighty percent of people don’t realize that home fires are the single most common disaster across the nation.

Home fires become more frequent from November thru February, but there are many things you can do to prevent a home fire and be prepared in case it happens. Space heaters that are left unattended and near combustible material are a big cause of home fires this time of year.

In an effort to keep you safe, Pulaski Fire Department and the Giles County Rescue Squad are asking homeowners to have an escape plan if there is a fire and to find two ways out of the home.

Both departments say prevention is the key to staying safe. Install a smoke detector on every level of your home and make sure the batteries are changed on a regular basis.

Practice fire escape plans at least twice a year and designate a meeting spot outside and make sure all family members know the meeting spot.

Fire fighters in the county remind everyone to be cautious and practice common sense fire safety in their home.
