Nearly one in six Tennesseans say they will spend more on gifts in 2019, according to a recent A-A-A Consumer Pulse survey.

The boost in spending comes from a strong labor market, which is generating higher incomes and boosting consumer confidence.

November is the busiest time of year for holiday shopping, according to A-A-A research. Around 80 percent of consumers will begin their holiday shopping before December. The top shopping days for consumers are all in November on Black Friday, Cyber and Thanksgiving Day. The average Tennessee shopper plans to spend $845 on gifts a spending increase of 4 percent over last year.

The top gifts consumers want under the tree are: gift cards, cash, clothing, travel and electronics.

According to media resources, more than one in three consumers will use their smart phone to purchase gifts this year, a 16 percent increase over 2018.

Online shopping continues to gain ground this holiday season as 74 percent of shoppers say they will do at least half of their shopping on the web, so Cyber Monday will be the second busiest shopping day of the year behind Black Friday.
