One man is now without a home after a fire early Friday morning in Fayetteville.

Kerman Haynes was asleep in his room when the smell of smoke and the sound of his fire alarm woke him up.

"I opened the door and smoke just started pouring in," he said.

He carried his dog to the roof and tried to call for help, but he didn't have service.

"I got the dog down, and then jumped down and I want to say like 20 minutes later, there were just flames shooting out of the house,” Haynes said.

The Boonshill, Petersburg, Dellrose and Central stations from the Lincoln County Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call at around 5 a.m.

The Lincoln County Fire Department says the home on Hughey Road is a total loss and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Haynes had just finished renovating what he calls his dream home. Firefighters say the newly installed smoke detectors saved Hayes and his dog's lives.
