Having expired medication in your medicine cabinet is not a good idea.

If a loved one passes away, you should dispose of any medication that was being taken. Giles County Sheriff Helton said keeping old medications could encourage someone to break into your home looking for it.

A safe way to dispose of those medications is to take them to Walmart in Pulaski on October 26th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. where a drop-off box is located.

Helton cautions against flushing the old medication down the commode or throwing it in the garbage. Those methods could potentially harm the environment by contaminating the water or ground, he said.

Twice a year, the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is held by local law enforcement.

Helton said anyone having a large amount of medicine to dispose of or anyone having questions, should call him at 363-3505 and he will help in any way he can.
