Stockpiling fescue is a management practice for Giles County beef producers which can provide some additional late season grazing and can help delay hay feeding for a few weeks.

This fall is one of the best in recent years for stockpiling fescue.

According to Kevin Rose, Giles County Extension Director, some producers utilizing this practice have been able to graze through December and in some cases into the next year.

The process begins by removing cattle from a field by the end of August and it is recommended to set aside about 1 to 1.5 acres per cow to stockpile.

The stockpiled pasture should be allowed to grow through late October or the first of November.

Rose said stockpiling fescue can extend the grazing season and reduce winter hay feeding and provide some good quality forage.
