A potential scam in which people are contacted by telephone by someone claiming to be a Medicare representative has been reported by the Giles County Health Department.

The scam calls appear on caller ID to come from the Giles County Health Department and  are automated messages asking to verify Medicare account information for a person in the household.

The calls ask potential victims to call back to confirm information, which may include requesting personal information such as date of birth, address, social security number, etc.

The health department does not contact people by automated phone messages to provide medical test results or request personal information such as health insurance information, and warns everyone not to share any personal information in this manner.

The Giles County Health Department has notified law enforcement about this matter. Anyone with questions or concerns about an unauthorized release of or request for health insurance or other personal information should contact his or her local law enforcement agency.

Giles County Law Enforcement have asked people in the county to never give personal information such as name, address, Social Security number, credit card information or medical information to a stranger over the phone.
