Approval of changing meeting time and pay for each commission meeting is on the Monday's agenda of the Giles County Commission.

Afternoon starting times for future county commission meetings have been recommended by the Giles County Commission’s Legislative Committee.

After the July meeting, Shelly Goolsby resigned as a District 7 commissioner, saying she would lose time from her teaching job to attend commission meetings unless the meetings started at 4 p.m.

During the Giles County Commission's Legislative Committee meeting, Commissioner David Wamble said he would have voted for the later starting time had he known about Goolsby’s predicament.

County Commissioner and Legislative Committee chairman Tracy Wilburn said if it is changed to 4 p.m. he would resign.

After further discussion, the committee will recommend starting the additional meetings in October, December, February, April and August at 4 p.m., which needs commission approval Monday before taking effect.

Commissioners have been paid $75 for attending commission meetings, $40 for committee meetings and $20 for attending meetings of committees to which they do not belong.

County Executive Melissa Green told the committee there were different ways to handle this issue.  She said a flat monthly salary would be easier for financial management office instead of time sheets that commissioners sign for attending meetings.

Commissioner Mike Cesarini made a motion to leave the pay alone, which did not pass, before committee members endorsed a $250 monthly salary.
