Discussion of non-resident students and hiring a new school board attorney were discussed Thursday night during the Giles County Board of Education Work Session.

Acting Schools Director Dr. Vickie Beard told the board she had received several request concerning the tuition of allowing students to attend Giles County Schools that are living outside of the county.

"I have a family that has moved to another state, but have said they would transport their two children back and forth just for them to attend a school in Giles County. We want to hang on to students in our county, Beard added.

Records shows that Marshall County does not charge a tuition for students coming outside of their county, Maury County charges $1,000 and Limestone County, Alabama $511.23

Beard said there are students living outside Giles County that are interested in coming to schools in our county.   Board members agreed to move policy 6.204 - Attendance of Non-Resident Students - to the August 1st board meeting.

A question during the meeting was if Chuck Cagle, board attorney from Nashville, has a contract with the Giles County School Board?

Board members, Financial Management and Beard did not know of a file showing a contract with Cagle.

Financial Management director Beth Moore Sumners said the department budgets $10,000 a year for special counsel, but Cagle only charges by the invoice which totals approximately $2,000 a year.

The board did not approve how Cagle handle Beard's contract at the last board meeting and is looking to replace him.

Knox Vanderpool, school board member from 7th district, said he had discussed the situation with Henry, Henry and Stack and they would be available.

Richie Brewer was very out spoken to the board that he is done with Cagle and is willing to hire someone around Giles County.

The board approved Vanderpool to investigate and see if there is a contract with Cagle and to talk with other local attorneys then  bring back information to the next meeting.
