Southside Elementary Principal Carmen Hayes told the Giles County School Board Thursday night that the county’s summer reading program, Read to be Ready, was once again successful in helping at-risk students up to rising third graders retain and grow their reading skills.

Hayes said the local program served 114 Giles County students this year at Pulaski Elementary, Richland Elementary, Elkton Elementary and Minor Hill schools.

Also during the Thursday night meeting, fees at each school were discussed and the board agreed to adopt a fee with a $50 maximum per family per school with additional to Chrome Book fees.

Giles County High School Principal Donna Cobb said an additional $15 parking fee plus proof of insurance is required for student to park on campus.

Board agreed that students would not be punished if parents cannot pay the school fees.

In other business, the bus tire bids were taken off the table and board members approved one tire bid from Piedmont and all other tires to be purchased from state bids.
