The Giles County Commission's Law Enforcement committee has recommended a $2.587 million budget for the sheriff’s department and $2.513 million for the jail.

In other budgets including in the law enforcement consideration are courtroom security, drug enforcement and administration of the sexual offender registry. Recommendations were $207,458 for courtroom security, just over $39,000 for drug enforcement and $7,535 for administration of the sexual offender registry to be included in the 2019-2020 budget.

According to committee members, in the past those budgets allocated money to provide help in employing correction officers.

Also, the ad-hoc committee is working on a long range plan to reduce jail overcrowding as a part of a pilot program organized by the Tennessee Criminal Justice Institute.

Each year the county attempts to includes 4 new patrol cars for the Sheriff's Department in the year's budget.

Commissioners voted earlier this year to station SROs at each school in the county and were able to acquire used vehicles for those officers.
