A family of seven is recovering after a Wednesday morning blaze destroyed their home on Nick Davis Road, east of Oakdale Road, in Athens.

The family includes two parents and five children ranging in age from 9 months to 16 years.

A teenage boy was asleep in the home when the fire started, but Athens building inspector Clifton Kirby was able to get the boy out of the burning home.

.Kirby knocked on the door but couldn't get anyone to answer.

Athens Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal James Hand said the teenage boy was in the home's basement at the time. The teen said he was asleep when Kirby knocked out a window. Kirby was able to get him out safely, he said.

No one was injured in the fire, but the home is a total loss.

Personnel from all three fire stations responded alongside Athens police and Athens-Limestone EMS. Off-duty firefighters were called to help. Firefighters worked to extinguish hot spots most of the day, according to officials.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
