The Giles County Commission will take a different approach this year in examining and approving the 2019-2020 budget.

The process will start with a same tax rate, $2.8247 as in 2018-2019.
This year’s budget is based on a 96.5 percent collection rate.

The amount of funds raised by each cent of the tax rate, is $59,642, which could increase.

Barrett Group has been contracted by the county to do a SITUS Tax Audit.

The Budget Committee was recently told the county will get $90,000 through the audit, which does not cost the county, but Barrett Group keeps half of what is recovered.

Also, impacting the budget is improvements to Tarpley Shop Road at the south end of Dan Speer Industrial Park South.

 The State of Tennessee is paying most of the cost for improving the road, though the county’s share which is approximately $108,000 for the right of way and relocation of utilities. Another 20 feet of right of way is also needed, and the road will be rebuilt for  heavy vehicles.

Approximately $495,188 has been set aside for nonprofit organizations in the 2019-20 budget.

The financial management office will work with all applicants because this is the first year using this system.

Applicants will not be asked to come when requests are considered unless requested by the Budget Committee.
