The Pulaski Mayor and Alderman approved a Water and Sewer rate increase on the first reading during the board meeting on Tuesday.

City Administrator Terry Harrison recommended to the board a rate increase by 8 percent which means anyone using 1,000 gallons or less would pay $13 for water and $13 for sewer. The water rate over 1,000 gallons would increase from $2.59 per 1,000 gallons to $2.88. The sewer rate would increase from $4.40 per 1,000 gallons to $4.75. Utility district rates would increase from $2 to $2.16 per 1,000 gallons.

"Water and Sewer is a never ending problem," said Harrison.

He told the board there was a small water and sewer rate  increase two years ago.

Alderman Rickey Keith said this increase is a necessity and the city would not charge more than they have to.

After a lengthy discussion, the board voted to increase the rate with board member Vicki Harwell  voting no.

Also during the meeting,  five bids were opened on water and sewer improvements.  The bids were from companies in Tullahoma, Wartrace and Culleoka.

The board approved for Harrison and the engineer to review all bids and come back with a recommendation.
