A safety hazard concern for both the Amish traveling by buggy and motorists have drawn concerns by the  Tennessee Department of Transportation.

In Lawrence County, a dependable horse can be just as good as a dependable car.

According to Carlos Wilhite of the Amish Welcome Center in Ethridge,  a lot of buggies go up and down that road every single day and it creates a real safety hazard.

Within the past 12 months  Lawrenceburg police department have reported  8 motor vehicle accidents involving Amish buggies and out of those one was a fatality..

Lawrenceburg Mayor Blake Lay said the Amish community in the town is growing.

The safety concerns haven’t gone unnoticed as the TDOT  is now looking at what can be done to stop the crashes.

TDOT has proposed a 14-foot path on one side of the road behind the curb so that way the vehicles are separated from the buggies.

The buggy lane would run about a mile and a half on the north side of town next to Highway 43.
