The Jail Subcommittee of the Giles County Law Enforcement is working with the Tennessee Corrections Institute on a pilot program to ease overcrowding in the county jail and to plan the future on whether Giles County needs to enlarge the  jail.

Through the program, county commissioners on the subcommittee are working with administrators of the county jail to use information from jail operations to go with observations of commissioners to compile a report.

A grand jury inspection of the county jail shows the jail is overcrowded and the TCI plans to work with the county on a possible solution.

Grand jurors by law are to inspect the condition and management of county buildings, institutions and jails.

According to County Commissioner Rodney Journey, things in the grand jury report will be addressed.

Sheriff Kyle Helton is in charge of the overall jail operation.
