Giles County Executive Melissa Greene reported to the Commission’s Public Service Committee that a part of the investigation into operation of the former Giles County Dog Pound has been completed.

The State Comptroller’s Office continues the dog pound investigation while 22nd Judicial District Attorney General Brent Cooper’s office has completed their work.

Planning continues for an animal shelter in the county, which will be built on the dog pound site and adjacent land.

Plans are for the facility to staff a shelter manager, who will report to the county executive and a trained deputy sheriff, who will be the animal control officer. This officer will have arrest powers and will be able to write citations.

One quote for constructing the shelter was from Custom, Concrete and Building of Ethridge which carries a proposed price tag of approximately $96,000.

Most of the cost would be $48,600 for a kennel, plus a finished office, laundry, lavatory and storage feline area.

The price also includes two open side sheds, concrete block exterior walls and dividers and exterior metal walls plus a concrete floor, reinforcement and plastic moisture barrier.

Plumbing that includes drains for kennels, bathroom, wash area and laundry would cost approximately $3,900.

Electrical, insulation, heating, ventilating and air conditioning, wall cover, metal, drywall and other fixtures would cost approximately $32,000, and a chain link fence, including gates, labor and materials would cost approximately $12,100.
