A small, back portion of Walters Drive, located just off Highway 31 North, is subject to close if a petition is approved first by the Giles County Planning Commission and then the Full Commission.

Landowners William and Belinda Sulcer petitioned the closing because the road dead ends onto their farmland, Superintendent of Roads Barry Hyatt told members of the County Highway Committee at its regular meeting. The petition asks for almost half a mile of Walter's Drive be closed. Hyatt said the Highway Department is in favor of the petition.

Tim and Velena Newton, the other landowners affected by the closure, agree to the petition as long as the Newton Cemetery entrance be left open.

It may take some time before the road can officially be closed. The Highway Committee approved sending the petition to the Planning Commission, where it will be researched by the county attorney. If approved there, the petition will go before the Full Commission, who won't meet until the middle of September.
