Several residents in the Lynnville area reported today (Tuesday) concerning scam telephone calls.

A person told WKSR a voice message was left on their phone stating  they were with Social Security Administration and it was an urgent call and needed their social security numbers. A callback number was 1-917-504-8579.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is warning Americans about scammers posing as employees of the agency in order to steal their personal information.

The SSA strongly discourages people from providing personal information over the telephone unless they are certain of who is on the other end of the line.

According to Sheriff Kyle Helton, scams  continue to plague Giles Countians, who run the risk of their identity being stolen just by answering the telephone.

Don't answer the phone if you don't recognize the number, Helton said, but if you do answer, don't give out your Social Security or bank account numbers or other personal information.

If you have questions about a phone call, email, text message or any other type of communication claiming to be from the SSA, you can contact any Social Security office or call Social Security’s toll-free customer service number at 800-772-1213 to make sure it is legitimate.
