State Representative David Byrd of Waynesboro, has introduced legislation that would increase the fine to $25,000 for anyone that is guilty of using spoofing of phone numbers.

In Giles County and surrounding counties the calls are showing local phone numbers.

As introduced the bill, increases from $10,000 to $25,000 the civil penalty amount per violation that the attorney general and reporter may bring in an action against a person who commits the offense of caller identification spoofing; clarifies that each call received by a subscriber wherein the caller identification information is misleading or inaccurate constitutes a separate violation for purposes of imposing the civil penalty.
