Elkton Board of Mayor and Alderman asked City Attorney Joe Fowlkes to write a sample ordinance during their February meeting to allow serving of beer for special events in the city park.

Brandy Blade, wife of Alderman Payton Blade, said she wants to organize a festival in the city park at which adults may buy beer. Proceeds would benefit community organizations, a different one each year.

In other business a request to allow an adult bookstore to open on Sunday was denied by the board.

William Johnson, of Waverly, had written a letter to the city asking that the adult bookstore on Bryson Road, just off I-65, open for business from noon-10 p.m. on Sundays, a move which would increase city sales tax revenues.

After discussion, board members Payton Blade, Bill Bonjour, Rebecca Bryant, Bill Cary and Jim Lathrop voted not to allow the expanded hours.

While Giles County has an Adult Entertainment Board to regulate businesses, the city of Elkton has the option to regulate these kinds of businesses in the city.

Road work list was approved and may be changed by the board. Members approved a road paving schedule of $53,780 worth of work, including Sunset Drive, $14,592; Persimmon Island Road, $9,477; Grigsby Road, $15,796; Long Road, behind Elkton Elementary School, $8,725; Main Street, $5,190.

The Giles County Highway Department will be responsible for doing the work with the city paying for materials and labor.

Board members named Payton Blade to fill a vacancy created when Darren Shockney resigned as alderman to take a second shift job that would prevent him from attending board meetings. Blade is a former alderman and vice mayor.
