Pay for the Giles County commissioners were discussed during January's Budget Committee meeting.

Commissioners receive $75 dollars for attending meetings and $40 for committee meetings and $20 if they are not on the committee.

The pay proposal would give commissioners a percentage of the county's executive salary, divided by the 21 commissioners and then by 12 months.

The county budgets approximately $42,000 for commissioners' salary according to the Giles County Financial Management Office.  The proposal could cost slightly more.

Several commissioners say they do not attend meetings for pay, but out of the desire to do public service.

Commissioners pay is a decision from the county government and not by state law.

Next Giles County Commission meeting is in March.
