Two people were killed in an accident on Interstate 65 near Columbia on Sunday.

The northbound lanes of the freeway were closed for more than an hour after the single vehicle crash, which occurred shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday.

A 2005 Honda Accord traveling northbound on the interstate left the road and crashed into a wooded area, down an embankment and struck a tree.  

Maury County Fire Department found the severely damaged vehicle with three individuals trapped inside.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol identified the two deceased as Jason A. Watson of Lawrenceburg and Sondra Springer of Lexington, Alabama.

One was transported by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, and another was taken by ambulance to Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia.

The driver of the vehicle, Talia Hensley, and a third passenger, Shannon Alexander, both of Lawrenceburg, remain in serious condition.
