There is a 60 percent chance southern Middle Tennessee will see snowfall this weekend, according to recent forecasts from the National Weather Service.

If not, the region will likely see heavy rainfall, with the service reporting a 90 percent chance of rain this weekend.

The NWS has issued a warning across the country, as a strong weather system will make for a dangerous weekend on the road for large portions of the United States.

The storm system will track across the Southern Plains on Friday to the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic through Sunday and heavy snow and ice will be likely from eastern New Mexico to Oklahoma on Friday into Saturday, and then across the central Appalachians to the Mid-Atlantic from Sunday into Monday.

The weather service says the storm will push eastward this weekend and continue spreading hazardous wintry weather from parts of the Tennessee River Valley into the southern Appalachians, with heavy rain across the South.
