Eighty percent of Americans don’t realize that home fires are the single most common disaster across the nation.

Home fires become more frequent from December thru February, but there are many things you can do to prevent a home fire and be prepared in case it happens. Space heaters that are left unattended and near combustible material are a big cause of home fires this time of year.

In an effort to keep you safe, Pulaski Fire Chief Don Collins wants homeowners to have escape plans if there is a fire, to find two ways out of the home, and to stay low.

The chief says prevention is the key to staying safe. Install a smoke detector on every level of your home and make sure the batteries are changed on a regular basis.

Practice your fire escape plan at least twice a year. Designate a meeting spot outside and a safe distance from your home. Make sure all family members know the meeting spot.

Chief Collins reminds everyone to be cautious and practice common sense fire safety in their home.
