Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely was elected to what could be a record 10th term Tuesday.

With all precincts counted, Blakely, a Democrat, scored a victory over Republican challenger Eric Redd and write-in candidate Eric Smith. Blakely received 57.01 percent of the vote, while Redd garnered 41.95 percent. More than 300 voters, or 1.04 percent, cast a write-in ballot in the race.

“It's very humbling,” he said. “I'm very blessed and fortunate.”

Despite his election successes over the past 36 years, this will be Blakely's last run for sheriff.

“This is something I've always wanted to do and enjoy doing, but honestly this is my last race,” he said. “I don't see myself running for anything again.”

“I've been blessed to not only have the people of this county behind me, but also the greatest group of employees,” Blakely said.
